The bride, owner of Nolan Jewelry, was a crafty DIY bride, which makes sense. But she was smart enough to know to not do her own bouquet for her wedding. A big no-no in my book. It really takes way longer than one would think. Sometimes we remake the bouquet 3 times to get it right, and I know I wouldn't want to be fumbling around the day before my wedding. This style however, of wildflowers, is the easiest.

For Wildflower Bouquets You Need:
1 bunch larkspur or stock
1 bunch dahlias or lisianthus
1 bunch snapdragons
1 bunch wild greens
Clean all flowers and cut really long stems to about 16-18'' so it's easier to work with.
Divide the flowers into the number of bouquets and separate bunches.
Using the spiral technique (attend my class if you need to learn;) take one of each type of flower in your left hand, and continue to add in one type of flower, alternating 1-2-3-4, so that you get a nice mix throughout.
Secure with floral tape, duct tape, whatever you have that will hold it!
Add ribbon and secure with pins.
Cut stems all same length and place in water.

The Bad News - I was going to be a guest judge on Cupcake Wars (I know!!!!!!!), but it didn't happen this season. There's always next. But, I'll admit it, I was excited to go film it.
The Good News - I'm doing a segment for CBS/KCAL for Thanksgiving (during Sweeps) about nontraditional Thanksgivings with a personal Chef hero of mine (like such a hero I'm kind of scared she's going to think I'm a stalker since I hand-picked her to do the segment). We are taping in the next week or two, so stay tuned. I even made a fake cooking show when I was 13 with a friend, in the same vein as her show. Yes, I'm trying to get that VHS from her, but that was many years ago.
So the point is, some things happen, some get canceled, some come full circle. I do get bummed- I'm human. But then I say, onto the next!
There's always something going on, that's why you can't rely on one thing. You gotta have a lot going on, so that if something doesn't pan out, it's not the end of the world. Ya know? I also work on personal projects- writing, and such, so it's just never a dull moment. Only boring people are bored. Live life to the fullest! Goals constantly change, you constantly change. Enjoy the ride, enjoy the journey. Don't be afraid of change- embrace it. Do what you want to do, and make it happen. Only you can make it happen. So write if you want to act, draw if you want to build, produce if you want to direct, create if you want to be an artist, love if you want to be loved.
A day late, a dollar short. You know how the saying goes. So today I announce the launch of yesterday's newest venture! Flour LA, Jr! had our soft launch yesterday, and I'm ecstatic over the response! We throw children's parties where kids play with, arrange, and create flowers. It's already been a big hit, probably because parents love seeing their kiddos happy, and it turns out that flowers do just that!

Made this for Flour LA Signature Bouquets (where you'll find them in retail stores along Abbot Kinney in Venice. Check out French Market Cafe and Local 1205). Totally random, but it wasn't- I made this the same day as the party below.

I think society tells us that boys shouldn't like flowers, but when they do arrangements, it's like putting a puzzle together. I'm gonna change the notion of what gender is and means. It's not fair to boys or girls to live in a society and being boxed in.

Alaina laughed when I asked if I could hire her. She didn't know I was serious!;) Kids have such an imagination- they do things very quickly and with instinct. We lose that as we get older. We weigh actions and consequences. We subtract risk from reward. Sometimes we shouldn't. When I do flowers, I just go for it. That's why I also call myself The Iron Chef.
I'm so lucky that my friends at CCCW invited me to do the florals for their grand opening party. I love everyone that works there. Maybe it's because we've got that east-coast no b.s. vibe going on, or just because they are just so nice- whatever it is, I like it.
My original concept was something off kilter, and Lauren at CCCW said, tone it down. So I toned it down, and our next design was what you see below, but the purple and yellow stems were sticking out like polka dots. So we toned it down again, and voila!
Finally, another good photo by my friend Maya Myers! Her work is so good, and she really is able to capture the moments. Her specialty is weddings, which is where we actually met - at the vineyard wedding last September. The woman can do it all though, and just finished a gorgeous family portrait session this past week.
Here I am between Maya and another photographer, Cat of Next Exit. Her hubby is super sweet too. This shooting duo are veterans in the industry, and have the work to prove it. There's definitely no shortage of photographers (and planners) at these functions, but everyone show camaraderie, which is unexpectedly nice! Each also has their own distinct style.
In the pink to the right is another photog friend of mine, Laura Grier of Beautiful Day. This woman is a renaissance photographer- shooting weddings and travel. We met during the photoshoot she produced for Modele Magazine, at the Hicksville trailer park, which will be out this November. We shot it in April 2012. To the left is the top wedding and event planner Mindy Weiss. I remember her coming into Mark's Garden frequently when I worked there back in 2006. This woman knows what she's doing! She is sooooooo nice too. Like genuinely nice. I noticed she introduces herself as Mindy Weiss. How often do we say our full name? She says it with unassuming authority, and deservingly so, as she is a top expert. So, from now on, it's not, Hi I'm Carly- it's Hi there, I'm Carly Cylinder, nice to meet you.
Since they are so darn good at sculptural cakes, I decided I would make one of their logo. Welp, lets just say that the three buildings looked more like a tombstone in a grave. When I showed Lauren a picture of the disaster on my phone, she let out the biggest belly laugh.
Maya Myers, David Pressman of David Pressman Events (and my favorite person to attend an event with, besides my dad), and myself. I hope to be working with him on a huge and extravagant week long birthday party in Santa Barbara for his east coast clients this Fall.
Myself with the amazing and dazzling Kristin Banta and her associates. I worked with her on the Hicksville photoshoot, and wow- I mean, this woman knows event design. She calls herself an event producer, which she is- she can pump out a million dollar wedding with hundreds of guests, with ease and perfection. She even had a special on Bravo for her out-of-the-box weddings, and I absolutely love talking to her about the whole reality world.
Charm City Cakes West's home on Melrose in Weho. How beautiful is it?! And next door is Cake Mix. Duff has made his mark on this town for sure! He told me they were in three different kitchens working before this space was ready.
